Week 21

Posted 10/6/2018 3:11am by Stephanie Bradshaw.

Good Morning,

Can you believe that October is here?  Despite these warm temperatures, October is by far, one of my favorite months of the year.  I'm ready for some cooler weather.  We are expecting our first frost around the 16th of this month - so it's definitely on the way!

We've had several emails and text about the Daikon radishes that were in the shares this past week. They resemble a white carrot - and we included the greens because they are so delicious in stir-fries, soups or even roasted.  The radish is great raw in a salad to give it a nice kick - or even roasted in the oven with your sweet potatoes. Throw some chopped up radishes in your soup - they cook up similar to a carrot!

Our full shares received maple syrup this week.  It was such a nice treat!  Once you've had pure maple syrup - it's hard to go back to the imitation stuff, sorry Aunt Jemima!  Our half shares received a half dozen eggs.  Those of you trying our pastured eggs for the first time - we hope you can see and taste the difference.  The yellow yolks are a beautiful reminder that our hens are on pasture eating bugs, grubs and grass, which provides lots of omega 3's (up to 20 times more than factory raised eggs)and at least twice as much vitamin E as store bought eggs. Enjoy!

What's on the menu for Week 22?  Glad you asked!  We hope to see romaine lettuce, sweet potatoes, okra, microgreens, butternut, peppers, mustard greens or swiss chard, and hopefully, a taste of some homegrown, fresh popped popcorn straight off the farm!  We have been shelling our dried corn this week and wanted to give you a taste of fresh popcorn.  It will be popped in coconut oil and sprinkled with hemalayan salt.  Yummy!

I am so excited at the prospect of romaine lettuce in the shares this upcoming week!  Fresh lettuce is hard to beat.  I've been buying some romaine from the store and it's either bitter or bland.  I like the extra crunch in salads, but it just can't compete with the fresh - sweet lettuce we will see next week.

Don't forget....we've got our Pasture Raised Turkeys available for the holidays.  Don't miss out on these amazing birds.  We are taking deposits and will plan to deliver them in early November.

Speaking of Pasture Raised Meats, don't forget to Sign Up for our Winter Meat CSA!  We will deliver once a month (or every other month) from November - April.  We will also have produce, pastured eggs and other items available in the farm store that you can order.  Be sure to Sign Up before October 15th and save $30!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers to Healthy Eating,
